Kurashiki

Kurashiki is located just to the west of Okayama, and is a historical and shopping paradise. With a history going back to the Heian Period (794-1185), the modern city was founded in 1928 although many of the buildings are actually from the 17th century. Inside these amazing historical buildings (called 'kura') are numerous small shops and restaurants with many beautiful handicrafts and one very good Okonomiyaki restaurant. Strolling the streets of Kurashiki, one can imagine walking the same streets in centuries long past, appreciating the same views of weeping willows and canals filled with koi.
